WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THE VICTORIAN ERA THAT THIS WAS THE NAGELESQUE TREND ART OF THE DAY?

Dropsy, scurvy, consumption, cholera, horseless carriage things, pleurisy, gout, mustard gas face (coming soon), corset rot, scullery death, young Jack the Ripper, tennis elbow (the more things change…am I right?) and bramblechabby syndrome.
